Induction project (LEVEL 3 GAMES DESIGN)

Self portraits
I designed my own portraits using a method where i draw a circle, a line down through the circle, three separate lines for the eyes/eyebrows, ears , nose and mouth; i used eye sockets to show where the eyes would be. I also included details such as hair. I used different types of chins for some portraits to represent if the portrait was a man or woman by using a sharp chin for women and a squared chin for men.
I created a character using the Riley method for the head so that i could work out the right locations for the eyes, ear, mouth and nose. I also drew a body to develop the character.
I used the riley method to draw a friend who allowed me to draw his face.

I have attempted to use Sinix's method of tone to create faces starting off with a base tone, this will make sure no white spots show up in the face. Next is to use highlights of about three colours to show a yellow/red colour for the forehead, red for the central/middle area and a blue/red/yellow for bottom/chin area. I also used a dark green/grey colour for the shadows of the face such as the temples and eye sockets; also i made part of the left side of the face darker to show shadow.

I created an African black man in Photoshop using the brush tool with different shades of brown. I used brown as my base tone and then went on to use a dark/light brown as the highlights. Darker brown colours were used for shadows and i also used lighting on the right side of the face which shows where the light source is coming from.

Self portrait project
Picture of myself used so that i could draw my portrait.

I started drawing my portrait of myself while recording the process with VLC media player. I drew the outline of my portrait using a my own picture as reference. I started colouring in the face with a dark base brown colour.
I carried on with the colouring of the face with lighter shades of brown and lighter tones with showed off where the light source is. Also coloured my hair and light onto the hair.

The final painting of my self portrait. Never finished my self portrait as there were still uncoloured areas and also areas not properly blended. I finished most of my face, neck and body/clothing with the colours i wanted such as brown, grey, black, etc.

Analysis
I created a self portrait, the theme being to use the grid method. I was not influenced by any artist or any art style. My work reminds me of the two-tone art style. I used Photoshop with a wacom tablet & pen to create my self portrait; Photoshop was suitable as it had plenty of tools for me to use for my self portrait like the brush, smudge, eraser tools as well as the ability to change the opacity of the brush tool to blend. I used design techniques such as colouring, blending and grid method. The grid method was helpful with creating the head and facial features as it showed which areas were in each square of the grid. The meaning of the self portrait i conveyed was showing where the light source was by painting the area on the left lighter then the rest of the skin to show the light coming from the left; I could of showed this technique more effectively by making the lighter area less pink so that the skin could look more natural and show that light is actually being shone from the left. I could of tried using some perspective to show that the light was shining onto the side of my head. Today's work shows more improvements such as more colouring and better lighting on the face. I would try blending the colours differently so that they are not so separate and to work faster to finish the colouring for some parts.
