Cyberpunk setting: A futuristic theme will be used with contrasting colours such as bright colours from neon like blue that will illuminate the surroundings of the narrow streets of a cyberpunk city at night. Mid perspective will be used so that the sidewalk and buildings on the other side of the street will be seen.
"District 17" by Cedric Cunanan

Creepy alien-like creature: A creature with scaly skin and exposed parts of flesh will be hanging on a wall with a sticky substance as it stares creepily at the viewer. The room will have futuristic equipment and a window showing the outside (Space). Mid perspective will be used to show alien on wall and room.
"Xeno-Bat" by Benny Kusnoto

Armoured warrior: Depending on the type of warriors armour i create, the material will be made to look realistic, with details in the body armour, e.g. scratches. No weapons will be used, only the sheath for the weapon. Mid perspective will be used as i want to focus on the front part of armour but will also do turnaround of side views and back view
"Knight" by Jonah Booth-Remmers

Underwater city: An abandoned city at the bottom of the ocean stands derelict with explorers searching for treasures only to be unaware of the creature that lurks in the shadows. Moss grown over many years on the buildings and rubble. Low perspective will be used to show height of buildings and the explorers floating.
"Underwater" by Dragos Jieanu

Sunset landscape GIF: A bright orange sun will shine on the horizon, while a figure stands on a cliff, watching as the sun descends. Mid perspective will be used so that the figure on the cliff is seen in the middle of the sun.
"Sunset Isle" by Harrison Yinfaowei

Pirate ship: Wooden pirate ship is sailing on a rough sea with many waves while a storm is happening which shows the sailors on deck as what seems to be a kraken approaches from below the sea. Top perspective will be used to show pirate ship, waves and kraken below it.
"Korser, I Want My Cookies BACK!" by Kevin-Mark Bonein

Hybrid animal: A creature with 4 legs like a horse, dog, etc with realistic hair but the creature will have a different look from a normal creature, with a bears head, platypus's beak, Lemur's eyes, lions mane and horses body. Mid-perspective will be primarily used but i will also do a turnaround of the hybrid animal.
"Mixed Animals" by Ashley Graham

Chinese character: A character who wears robes and an Asian conical hat that smokes a pipe; sitting down, with two massive doors open that allow a light to shine into the room. Mid perspective will be used to show character in front of the light.
"Alchemist of Five Elements" by May Chang

Desert environment GIF: An environment that shows someplace in the middle of a desert with dunes and an oasis seen in the distance with a figure of a person running towards it.
"Friendship" by Nikolai Karelin

Floating islands: Islands floating in the sky as chains keep them from floating away, with a crystal exposed at the bottom of the island which glows with power. Low perspective will be used to show off the size of the islands and to see more of the crystal.
"Floating Islands" by Gabriele D'Aleo

"Expedition Of The Black Orchid" by Karol Jazwinksi

If i were to go with the pirate ship idea, i would want to show the kraken really trying to grab and destroy the pirate ship with its tentacles around the ship. I would not show off the whole of the kraken, only showing it tentacles coming out from the water. The kraken would be a colour like grey or green so that i could contrast the colours of the ship which would be brown. I would want the kraken's tentacles to frame the ship with tentacles all around the sides of the ship and this will be easily seen by the use of a high perspective.

"Alien covenant" by Corey McGill

"SCP-3199 Man-Chicken" by Ryan Van Dongen

If i go with the creepy alien idea, then i would like to show off abnormality of it, with a disformed shape and scary face with sharp teeth, bloody around the mouth and saliva from the mouth which could also make the alien look wild or starved for food; food being the viewer/human. The colour for the alien may be grey or beige for a very fleshy look. The alien would have eight eyes that would be fully black. The only light source would be from a torch (from viewer) that shines light into the direction of the alien, showing of most of the alien. The environment that the alien is in is a spaceship as the big window shows space and planets in the distance; other thing likes control panels will be seen with lights on, though there won't be any normal lights on in the spaceship so that the environment will be dark and allow the alien to appear more creepy.

This is the point where i decided what i would do for my FMP.

Pathway

UAL Level 3 Diploma in Art and Design (Game Design)
Project Title
2D pirate ship concept art
Section 1:  Rationale (approx. 100 words)
Different designs of ships created by other artists have influenced me as they can show dominance with a huge ship while others may show the opposite with a stormy sea crashing against the ship and krakens grabbing ships as if they were prey for krakens.
I have created a city being destroyed by an alien as a midpoint and the buildings serving as leading lines to the alien. Also a blazing fire is seen behind the alien which frames the alien. I used chiaroscuro with the light of the fire, getting dimmer as it gets closer to the viewer.
I have learnt how to use colour, tones, form, shapes, lines and textures.
I have developed using the golden spiral and rule of third methods.
I am hoping to develop perspective skills.

Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
I intend to create 2D concept art of an environment with a pirate ship on sea as the focal point, multiple waterspouts serving as the dominant forms and sub dominant forms; also a waterspout used to frame the drawing. Also, tentacles will surround the pirate ship and underneath, a silhouette of a creature will be seen which will be big enough to frame the pirate ship. The end product should look like an environment where a pirate ship is trying to make it through a stormy night, avoiding waterspouts as an unknown creature from below is attacking the pirate ship.

A pirate captain and his crew are sailing through ‘no man’s land’ which was avoided at all cost by every pirate in the seven seas, however, this pirate captain had stolen a sacred artifact from a king on land and had been getting chased by the royal navy ever since they left; the only way he thought of getting loose of them was to venture into ‘no man’s land’. This may have worked for the pirate captain but what waited ahead was nothing to celebrate about.

The game genre will be an action/adventure game as the style of the environment will have lots going on, such as the lightning, waterspouts and the tentacles being obstacles for the pirate ship. Third person would be used so that the ship could be seen when controlled.

I plan to use the technical skill, golden spiral, alternatively, I could use the rule of thirds to have more than one main point. I will try to use Karol JaźwiÅ„ski’s artwork as a reference to my own, I will also try to use a similar art style to Karol JaźwiÅ„ski on Photoshop.

Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 50 words)
To review and analyse on-going work, I’ll keep my blog updated with my research and progress of my final piece.
I’ll record my decision process on my blog.
I’ll record my problem solving on my blog.
I will organize my time with a project action plan to complete the project.

Research for FMP

I went to visit the SS Great Britain in Bristol for firsthand research. I was able to take multiple pictures of the different sides of the ship and deck of the ship as well as get a good understanding of how a real ship looks and the comparison of the size of the ship to a person. I believe that this research of the SS great Britain will help me greatly in my FMP as getting firsthand experience of a ship will allow me to understand how to draw a ship and make it fit in an environment such as a stormy sea.

Artist interpretation
I started my artist interpretation of Karol Jazwinksi's painting by drawing the line art of the ship and kraken, then applying the basic colours of paintings background such as different shades of green and brown for the sea and sky.
I then applied colour to the ship, colours used were brown and grey. I had to blend the colours on the sails to show lighting on them.

I had finished blending colours on the flags and started to colour the kraken. The kraken was underwater so the colours used were a very dark brown to show its silhouette. Since the painting is at a side view, it shows the split between above water where the ship is and below water where the kraken is.

I had finished colouring the kraken showing a brown and orange colour for the tentacles above water. I added the waves and splashes of water from the tentacles coming out and in the water. I added the kraken's eyes which are orange that glow in the water which stand out from the rest of its black silhouette. I also have show the cannons firing from the ship with colours used like orange and white to show off an explosion. I had also made it clearer that the kraken was underwater by making the split more obvious by making the lower part darker and part of the tentacles blurry when seen rising out the water.

I created an artist interpretation of Karol Jazwinksi's painting. The theme was concept art of  kraken attacking a pirate ship. I was influenced by Karol Jazwinksi to create my interpretation of his work by using my own style while maintaining the same colours. My work compares to myths of sea monsters on old sea maps such as krakens. I used Photoshop to create the artist interpretation as they were useful for being able to to use the eyedropper tool to use the exact same colours, smudge tool was useful for blending colours and and making certain parts appear blurry(tentacles seen rising from above water) and setting brush opacity to 25% to blend or fade out areas. I used techniques like keeping the same colours, similar proportions and the same perspective of Karol Jazwinksi's work onto my artist interpretation. Compared to last lessons work on the artist interpretation, i have been able to put finishing touches on the kraken such as its eyes and tentacles. I have made it more obvious where the sea ends and have used more shades of colour and blending for the water and the sky; now the sky looks like it is cloudy. I have also added the rigging of the ship. I would try adding more white colour in the water to represent the waves to show that there is a lot more movement happening due to the kraken and ship.

I feel like i have learnt how to better blend colours and use lighting more effectively; i think that i can take what I've learnt by doing the artist interpretation and use those skills for my FMP and other future projects.

Assassins Creed IV Black Flag third person player controlling ship
The third person perspective on the ship helps me understand the size of pirate ships and a pirate ship compared to the pirates on board. I am also able to see how the wheel of the ship is used.

Sea Of Thieves first person player aiming cannon
The lighting used helps me better understand how lighting is used on a rounded surface and how parts of a ship can appear really dark as if its a silhouette due to the lighting appearing from behind the ship.

Sea Of Thieves pirate ship concept
I wanted to look into more details of pirate ships by looking at games such as 'Assassins Creed IV Black Flag' and 'Sea of thieves'. I decided to look more closely to the side of the ships to get a better understanding of the shape, length, width, etc. I also wanted to get an idea of how the perspective of a ship is for first person views and third person views in games so that i can create the correct setting for my FMP.

'Pirates of the Caribbean at Worlds Ends' movie
I took inspiration from the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies as they show the lifestyles of pirates and how they act, with many scenes including pirate ships. Different types of pirate ships of different sizes can be seen in the movies showing off their importance for pirates in the era of piracy in the Caribbean which lasted from the 1500's till around the 1800's. Pirates required fast and seaworthy ships to even be able to commit piracy like destroying other ships and stealing treasures or gold.

'Pirates of the Caribbean: Isles of War' Facebook game
This concept art is for a Facebook game that is based on the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies and it displays five ships facing towards the viewer that show off the fronts of the the ships with the three up front showing off different sides of their fronts due to the perspective and their positions. This helps me to understand the perspectives of a ship by how its drawn whether its straight ahead or slightly to the side. Also the different sizes of the ships help me to understand how far away they are to me and the other ships. The centre ship is the largest and so can be seen as the dominant form; also the two ships beside the centre ship help frame it. The lighting also frames the ship and helps to make it stand out due to the light being so bright and the ships being dark.

'Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds Ends' movie
This is a scene from the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie where two pirate ships work together to take down a royal navy ship; this shows off the power of cannons. 3 ships are shown, two pirate ships that look similar with the exception of the colours and the the royal navy ship in the middle which is gigantic compared to the to other pirate ships.

'Carta Marina' Old sea map
The old sea map is a 500 year old famous map called 'Carta Marina' and it depicts the north of Europe to help sailors navigate on seas and on land. Sea monsters can usually be seen on old sea maps such as krakens as old folk tales. I can relate the sea monsters seen on the old sea maps to my FMP as i will create a kraken attacking the ship. Krakens are mythological creatures that are usually known to be humongous and have many tentacles to destroy ships sailing far out into the sea.

I created a new FMP with a different ship, and darker colours used. The theme i was going for was a dark pirate theme. I was influenced Karol Jazwinksi as he usually works with dark themed paintings. The ship reminds me of the black pearl ship as the hull area is similar with statue at the front. I used a hard brush tool to draw the lines of the ship and soft brush tool for the background colours. I have used design techniques such as perspective which has affected my design of my FMP as the ship is facing towards the bottom right corner, with a view of the side and top of the ship allowing the ship to seem complex. I have manipulated the viewer by making the perspective of the ship a side and top view of the ship, making it appear 3D. I could of used this technique more effectively by making the sails of the ship better aligned with each other. If i were to use colours, i could make the ship appear convincingly more 3D. Today's work involved more thought and reflection to be put into my FMP as i had decided on remaking my FMP. I would try being more productive by fully understanding how i want my FMP to turn out before starting it.

Private Study/Homework

I decided to experiment with my FMP by using the ship of my new version to replace my old ship to see how it would look. I like the composition of my old FMP as it follows the golden spiral and allows the painting to appear more dynamic.

This lesson, I carried on with my FMP, like changing the position of the pirate ship so that it fits the into the golden spiral and added colour to the pirate ship, kraken and water sprouts. The theme of my FMP was a pirate myth theme as it includes the kraken which is an imaginative creature known for destroying ships that were far out in the sea alone. I was influenced by Karol Jazwinksi's painting 'Expedition of The Black Orchid' as the kraken used in that painting has an effective impact on the painting as it is shown almost as a dark silhouette lurking underneath while its tentacles wrap around the ship, making the kraken appear menacing. My work reminds me of second 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie where a kraken's tentacles surround the ship. I used a soft brush tool on Photoshop to apply colour on the kraken, ship, water sprouts and lightning.Using the soft brush tool in Photoshop was suitable to use as it allowed me to easily apply colour in my painting for a sustained base colour for every individual part of the painting. I used design techniques such as colour to apply lighting and shadows onto the sails of the ship. I also adjusted the proportion of the ship so that it would be facing the top right corner instead as it needed to be organised for the kraken to be shown picking up the ship. These techniques affected my design as using them resulted in the kraken's colour being brown and bottom of the tentacles (where the suction cups would be) are orange and the ship having a dark brown colour with grey sails; the ship being held up by the kraken was also apart of what was affected as before, i was originally going to have the ship on the water and the kraken underwater. I was able to manipulate the viewer by making the pirate ship appear like it was being raised by the kraken by using perspective to make the kraken appear underneath the ship. I could of used this technique more effectively by adding shadows onto the kraken as the ship would be blocking part of the light. I could of used more colour techniques such as shadows and lighting to make the ship appear as if it was raised up high by the kraken. Today's work was competent as i knew where to paint the the kraken in my FMP. I would try making the colours more realistic so that the kraken would have darker colours to appear convincing and menacing.

I changed to shape of the kraken's head to be less rounded and added the eyes of the kraken which are a sickly green colour. I removed the lines of the octopus and started adding shadows on the kraken to show some depth and also show where the light did not reach. I added a splash effect for the front water sprout by using a lower opacity grey to draw a circle around the bottom of the water sprout, then use the smudge tool to smudge outwards from different angles from the splash. I added the front sail of the ship and added the rigging connecting across the sails of the ship. I removed some of sail where the tentacle came through to show that the kraken is trying to destroy the ship.

This lesson, i changed my FMP by changing the background so that less of the sky was visible and added lightning as if it was striking from the top and out of frame; i also added lighting onto the kraken and ship. The theme of my FMP was a pirate myth theme as the kraken is an old sea creature that many people during the golden age of piracy believed was real. I was influenced by Karol Jazwinksi as i liked the colours used in his painting 'Expedition of The Black Orchid'. My work reminds me of Karol Jazwinksi's painting 'Expedition of The Black Orchid' as the colours used are similar such as dark green. I used materials like the brush tool and smudge tool in Photoshop. The materials i used were suitable for my work as they allowed me to add lighting and shadows and blend colours together. Design techniques that i used were colour as i had added more darker shades of colours for the kraken and waterspouts as i wanted my FMP to appear darker themed and conceptual. This technique affected my design by making the kraken seem more 3D with shadows on the head and tentacles. I was able to manipulate viewers by making the tentacles have some depth and appear as if they were realistic by having some of the tentacles going in different directions and underneath the water. I could have used this technique more effectively by making the tentacles appear more erratic like real life squid tentacles. Today's work was easy to complete as i was able to understand how substantial the kraken was for making my FMP appear dynamic. I would try adding more shadows to the kraken to make it appear like the kraken has more of an impact.

Private Study/Homework

I carried on with my FMP of the pirate ship being attacked by the kraken. The theme of my FMP was a pirate myth theme as the kraken is an old sea creature that people thought were real in the golden age of piracy. I was influenced by Karol Jazwinksi's painting as i used dark colours, which Karol Jazwinksi would also use like dark green. My work could compare to Karol Jazwinksi's painting 'Expedition of the Black Orchid' which i have already done an artist interpretation on. I used Photoshop to create my FMP and mainly used tools such as the brush tool and smudge tool to paint. These materials were useful as they helped me to put more colour into my painting and to blend colours. This lesson, I used design techniques such as colours. Using this technique has affected my design as it has allowed me to create the splashes for the kraken and the waves in the water to give the kraken visual weight. I was able to manipulate my viewer by making my FMP appear from a top perspective. I could of used this technique more effectively by either removing the water sprouts behind the ship and kraken or changing the perspective of the water sprouts so that they appear as if they are coming from higher up. I could've used a different proportion for the lightning so that it was straighter and thinner as it would've appeared more dangerous and fast. I felt that today's work was easier to complete as i could see where my FMP was going with the colours and perspective of the kraken. The thing i would do differently would be to make the lightning appear brighter.

FMP Evaluation
My project was about creating an FMP which could be concept art, animation, 3D modelling or a game. I decided that I would create concept art of a pirate ship being attacked by a kraken. I was influenced by Karol Jazwinksi’s paintings as they were usually dark themed with sickly colours used. I was also influenced by the post-impressionism art style as paintings that use this style can be a mix between reality and a fantasy setting. I needed to research real life ships in order to understand their shape, I used primary research by visiting the ‘SS Great Britain’ ship in Bristol to see a ship upfront and gather photos of the shape of the front, side, deck and more of the ship. I looked at secondary research with old sea maps as they showed mythological monsters in the water, usually krakens. I used the hard brush for pirate ship and kraken but used a soft brush for the water, waterspouts and lightning. I need to use colour theory to use the brushes effectively. I used Photoshop; tools used were brush tool, smudge tool, eraser tool, lasso tool and eyedropper tool.

I used a post-impressionism art style as I was influenced by Van Gogh, I was also influenced by Karol Jazwinksi. Van Gogh’s painting ‘Starry Night’ has a twisted look, with the sky literally swirling and the black tower appearing shaky and distorted like a fire. Karol Jazwinksi’s painting has a realistic look with the textures used for the painting and lighting has been used realistically. Karol Jazwinksi’s painting influenced me more because I liked the colours used and how they were used to create a dynamic painting. I learnt from Karol Jazwinksi’s painting how to better use colour theory. Materials that I used were soft brushes and hard brushes in Photoshop software. They were effective for the task as the hard brushes allowed me to colour the base colours of the kraken and pirate ship while the soft brushes helped me to colour the waterspouts, lightning, and water and also to add secondary colours for the ship and kraken so that I could then blend the colours better. The tools I used like the smudge tool was appropriate as it allowed me to blend colours easily. Techniques like the golden spiral was appropriate as it allowed me to make the pirate ship the focal point by having parts of the painting like the kraken lead up to the ship. Originally, I drew the ship to be in the middle but then realised that it would not work with the golden spiral so I had changed the position of the ship so that it would be the focal point of the golden spiral, having the ship raised by the kraken. I needed to research real life ships so that I could understand the shape and sizes of ships. I did primary research of the ‘SS Great Britain’ to get a realistic understanding of ships and I also did some drawing experiments the ‘SS Great Britain’ (Front, side and back ship sketches). I did secondary research of krakens by looking at specific parts such as their tentacles and suction cups. All of the research I did was useful for me as I was able to apply what I learnt from them for creating the pirate ship and kraken in my FMP. I have completed what I originally set out to do in my project proposal.

I don’t like the colours I used for the kraken as the colour is a lighter than I wanted. I could develop the kraken further by adding more details to it and changing the colour to a darker brown. I like the positioning of the kraken and the ship as it appears dynamic. I could develop the ship to be more run down and broken to show how devastating the kraken is. I could make the whole creative process easier by planning the design of my FMP so that I don’t waste time restarting my FMP. Next time, I will spend more time on my shadows as I felt that the shadows on my FMP didn’t show enough to work well with the lighting. If I were to go back to my FMP, I would try to develop the shadows on the pirate ship, kraken, and water by using darker shades of a colour to represent the shadows of the object/creature. I feel that I did do enough research for the ship as there is evidence of my research on the ‘SS Great Britain’, however I couldn’t get enough research for the kraken as I weren’t able to gather research like tentacles. I managed my time well as I created daily objectives that allowed me to manage my time on specific tasks, I have these daily objectives on my blog. I felt that I did experiment enough with silhouettes of some of my ideas, sketches of the ‘SS Great Britain’ and an artist’s interpretation of Karol Jazwinksi’s painting ‘Expedition of The Black Orchid’; I have evidence of my experiments on my blog.
